Paranormal Romance

The River Witch and the Man Without a Shadow

Rowan Vale first saw the shadows disappear on a cold autumn evening when wind swept across the riverbank and mist rose from the water like slow moving ghosts. He had walked the same path every day after work but this time the twilight felt strange and heavy. The river glimmered with silver streaks as if holding reflections that did not belong to the world above it.

He stopped near the old willow tree. Its long branches brushed the surface of the water which was unusually still. A whisper drifted across the river thin and melodic.

Do not be afraid.

Rowan spun around but no one stood behind him. The path was empty. Only his own breath filled the air.

He turned back to the river and froze.

A woman stood upon the surface of the water.

She was barefoot robes flowing like liquid moonlight hair drifting along the wind as if made of mist. Her eyes were deep green with gold flecks that shimmered softly. She looked ethereal barely real yet every detail of her face felt strikingly present.

Rowan whispered Who are you

Her voice carried like a ripple in the air. My name is Lysa. Guardian of the River of Echoes. And I have watched you for many nights Rowan Vale.

Rowans chest tightened. Watched me But why

Because you have no shadow.

Rowan stared at her in disbelief. That is ridiculous. Everyone has a shadow.

Lysa glided closer. The river did not break beneath her feet. Look.

Rowan stepped under the willow where light from the fading sunset slanted across him. The golden beam passed him completely and fell straight onto the ground with no darkness behind him. No outline no trace no shape.

His breath caught. He had never noticed it before.

Lysa spoke softly. You lost your shadow the night you should have died. You were saved by a force you do not remember. And because of that the river has called you here.

Rowan tried to steady himself. What are you talking about When did I lose my shadow

Three years ago she answered. The night your car crashed into the frozen lake. You were pulled beneath the water. Your heartbeat stopped. The river felt your breath fade. But you returned to life with something missing. Your shadow. Your memory of that night. And a thread of magic still clinging to your soul.

Rowans head felt heavy. I barely remember anything from that accident. The doctors said it was trauma.

Not trauma Lysa whispered. Sacrifice.

The river stirred. The air thickened. Something deep beneath the water thrummed like a heartbeat.

Rowan looked at Lysa. Why tell me now

Because she said the river is changing. Something old is waking beneath it. Something hungry. And it is coming for you.

A loud splash cut through the silence. Dark ripples spread across the river. Rowan stepped back instinctively.

Lysa lifted her hand. A soft glow formed around her like gentle sunlight beneath water.

Come with me she said. You must know what you are before the river claims you.

Before Rowan could respond the water surged upward like a rising creature. A massive shape formed from the darkness. Long fingers made of swirling shadow reached toward him.

Lysa snapped her hand forward. The water crystallized into bright blue light pushing the shadow away for a moment.

Go she urged. Run toward the willow and do not stop.

Rowan ran. Behind him he heard the roar of the shadow creature as it lunged. Lysa fought it the river glowing bright beneath her feet. Her voice echoed through the mist.

I will find you Rowan. I promise.

Rowan reached the old path and sprinted until he collapsed on the cold grass beyond the riverbank. When he looked back the river was calm again as if nothing had happened.

But he knew better.

Something had changed forever.

Rowan did not sleep that night. He kept remembering the way Lysa looked at him with ancient sadness. He kept staring at the corner of his room where no shadow waited for him.

By sunrise he returned to the river.

The water shimmered softly. Mist drifted across the surface. For a moment he wondered if he imagined everything. Then a figure emerged from the willow shade.

Lysa.

She looked weaker than before her glow dimmer her shoulders tense.

You came back she said softly.

I need answers Rowan replied.

Lysa nodded and extended her hand. Come. I will show you.

They walked into the river. Instead of sinking the water solidified beneath Rowan like cool glass. Lysa guided him to the center of the river where the water was clearest.

She raised her hand and the river parted.

A long deep crack opened revealing a world beneath the surface. A place of shimmering tunnels flowing lights drifting souls and ancient echoes.

Rowan stared in awe. What is this

The River of Echoes Lysa said. The place where lost memories sleep and forgotten shadows gather. It is older than the world itself. And it remembers everything.

Rowan knelt near the glowing water. My shadow is here

Lysa nodded. Yes. The night you drowned something came for you. Something from the depths. It meant to take your life. I intervened. I pulled you out with river magic. But I could not save all of you. Your shadow slipped away into the river. And the creature that tried to claim you never forgot.

Rowan lowered his voice. Why save me

Lysa looked away pained. I was not meant to interfere. But I saw your face beneath the ice. I heard your last heartbeat. I felt something I should not feel. I broke the laws of the river for you Rowan. And the river punished me for it.

Rowan stepped closer. Punished you How

Lysa lifted her hands. Her skin glowed faintly but flickered like a candle at the edge of dying flame.

Every time I saved you the river took a piece of my magic. A piece of my life. I have lived here for centuries but now my time is breaking. I am connected to your shadow. If it is not restored to you I will fade.

Rowan whispered Why would you do that for me

Lysa met his eyes. Because the moment I saw you beneath the ice I knew my fate was bound to yours. The river chose our bond long before we understood it.

Rowans heart raced. He did not believe in fate. But the way she looked at him made something inside him shift.

What do we do he asked.

Lysa turned to the river. We find your shadow. Before the creature does.

They entered the river crack together. The world beneath was breathtaking. Glowing currents twisted like smoke. Echoes of memories drifted in spheres of light. Ancient voices hummed.

Yet danger pulsed beneath every ripple.

Rowan felt something brush against him. Lysa grabbed his arm.

Do not look into the memory lights she warned. Not unless you want to live someone elses life forever.

He nodded.

They approached a long dark tunnel. Lysa hesitated. This is where shadows gather. Hold my hand. Do not let go no matter what you see.

Rowan intertwined his fingers with hers. Her touch felt warm despite her fading glow.

They stepped inside.

At first there was only darkness. Then faint flickers appeared along the walls. Shadow figures slowly emerged. Pale outlines of lost people. Some walked endlessly. Some crouched. Some wept. None had faces.

Rowans stomach tightened.

Lysa whispered Your shadow is here somewhere. I can feel it.

Rowan heard something. A soft whisper identical to his voice repeating his own thoughts. He followed the sound until he found a small dense shape crouched in a corner. It rose when he approached revealing the silhouette of his own body eyes glowing faintly.

Rowan felt dizzy. That is me.

Lysa whispered It remembers everything you do not. It remembers the fear the drowning the bargain.

Rowan stiffened. What bargain

Before Lysa could answer darkness swept across the tunnel with violent force. The creature that attacked them before burst from the wall. It towered above them a swirling mass of teeth and shadow with long arms that stretched like night smoke.

Lysa pushed Rowan behind her. The creature roared.

It wants your shadow she said. If it consumes it you will never be whole. And it will claim your soul completely.

The creature lunged.

Lysa raised her arms but her glow faltered. She fought to gather water magic but her strength was fading too quickly.

Rowan looked at his shadow. It stared back trembling. He reached out instinctively.

The moment he touched it light burst through him. Memories flooded back.

The ice. The sinking. The cold. The creature grabbing his ankle. Lysa appearing in a rush of silver. Her hands pulling him upward. Her voice whispering Live even if it costs me everything.

The shadow clung to him merging into his skin in a rush of warmth and darkness. Rowan gasped as he felt whole for the first time in years.

The creature screamed.

Rowan could feel its power. Its hunger. But beneath that he felt Lysa collapsing.

He turned.

She was on her knees her body fading like mist.

No Rowan cried. Lysa hold on

She looked up at him eyes soft. It is all right. You are whole now. My duty is done.

Rowan shook his head. No. I will not lose you.

The creature lunged again.

Rowan stepped between it and Lysa. His restored shadow stretched wide across the tunnel glowing faintly with new strength. The creature roared and hesitated.

Lysa whispered astonished Rowan your shadow has power. The river gave you something back.

Rowan felt it too. His shadow moved with him alive and fierce. He raised his hand.

The shadow surged outward in a wave of bright darkness striking the creature. It shrieked as cracks of light tore through its form. It tried to retreat but Rowan stepped forward pressing the power into it with all his strength.

The creature shattered into flowing dust and vanished.

Rowan collapsed breathless. Lysa struggled to stand.

He rushed to her. Her glow was nearly gone.

Rowan whispered Please do not fade. Do not leave me.

Lysa touched his cheek weakly. You gave me more time than I deserved. The river will take me soon.

Rowan shook his head. No. There must be a way.

Lysa exhaled softly. There is only one way. A forbidden one. A binding. But it requires your consent. And your life will never be the same.

Tell me Rowan said.

Lysa whispered If you give me part of your restored shadow the river will accept it as payment and I will remain. But that shadow will bind us. Our lives will be tied. Our fates connected. Your heart will echo with mine. Your path will never be free again.

Rowan did not hesitate. Then take it.

Lysa froze. Rowan you do not understand what this means.

He cupped her face gently. I understand that I do not want to live in a world where you disappear. I understand that you saved me. That you have watched me. That you broke every rule for me. This is my choice. Let me save you now.

Lysa trembled. Rowan

He brought her close. Please. Stay.

She closed her eyes. Then slowly nodded.

Rowan lifted his hand. His shadow rose behind him. A fragment split away glowing like liquid darkness. Lysa extended her palms.

The fragment drifted into her chest.

The river roared shaking the tunnel. Lysa gasped as her body filled with new light. Her glow returned stronger than ever warm like sunlight through water.

She looked at Rowan breathless. I can feel you. Your heartbeat. Your thoughts. Your fear. Your hope.

Rowan stepped closer. You are alive.

Lysa smiled softly. Because you chose me.

The river calmed. The tunnel brightened.

Rowan took her hand. What now

Lysa intertwined her fingers with his. Now she said we rise together. Guardian and bonded soul. Two lives forever joined by river magic.

They returned to the surface hand in hand. The night sky shimmered above them. The willow swayed gently. The river glowed faintly with new energy.

Lysa leaned into him. The world is changing Rowan. Danger still waits beneath the depths. But I am no longer alone. And neither are you.

Rowan wrapped his arms around her. Whatever comes he whispered we face it together.

Lysa smiled as the moon reflected across the water. Together she echoed.

And the river whispered their names as if sealing a promise made by fate itself.
