The Hourglass Between Us
The old town of Ravenford was known for two things. Endless fog that wrapped around the narrow streets like a stubborn ghost and the ruined clock tower that had not worked for more than one hundred years. Locals claimed the tower broke the same night time itself fractured. They said the air bent strangely around it and that people who ventured too close sometimes heard whispers calling their names.
Lila Rowan never believed the stories. She had spent her entire childhood listening to the townsfolk repeat the same warnings again and again but Lila always thought they were exaggerations meant to scare children. After all nothing strange had ever happened to her. Nothing at all. Until the night she found the hourglass.
She discovered it in the attic of her grandmother’s house while cleaning out old boxes. The hourglass was small delicate and covered in dust. The wood frame felt warm in her hand despite the cold air in the attic. Inside the glass the sand shimmered faintly with a soft golden glow. It almost looked alive.
Lila frowned turning it slowly. Strange. The sand did not move. No matter how she tilted it the tiny grains stayed in place as if frozen.
That should have been the first sign that something was wrong. But curiosity guided her more than fear. She placed the hourglass on her desk planning to ask her grandmother about it later. Then midnight came.
Lila was brushing her hair when the hourglass suddenly pulsed with a soft flash of light. The golden sand stirred swirling like liquid sunlight. Before she could react the room shifted. The air trembled as if the world had drawn in a breath.
Who is here
A voice came from behind her. Smooth gentle and filled with a strange echo.
Lila spun around and gasped.
A man stood near the window tall and mysterious with hair the color of midnight and eyes that glowed softly like molten gold. He wore clothes that looked ancient yet elegant dark fabric shaped with intricate patterns like something out of a forgotten time. His presence filled the room with an energy that made her skin prickle.
Lila stumbled back. Who are you How did you get in here
He raised his hands slowly his expression calm though his eyes studied her closely. My name is Kael. I am not here to harm you.
Lila shook her head. That is not an answer.
Kael stepped forward only slightly. His voice held a soft warmth. I came because you called me.
I did not call anyone
You turned the hourglass.
Lila glanced at it still glowing faintly on her desk. I just picked it up. It was frozen.
Kael looked at the hourglass with an unreadable expression. That hourglass is not meant for your world. It is a tether. A bridge. It binds your time to mine.
Lila felt confusion twist inside her. Your time What does that even mean
Kael hesitated then spoke gently. I am not from this era.
Lila blinked. You mean you are from the past
His gaze softened. Yes. And from a place where time does not behave the way it does here. The hourglass once connected me to someone who lived long before you. But something has changed. You activated it.
Lila shook her head trying to process the impossible. Are you telling me that thing summoned you
Kael nodded. And opened a link between us.
She stared at him stunned. But why me
He studied her for several moments as if seeing through her skin into her thoughts. Because you carry the same spark as the one who owned the hourglass before. A rare connection to time itself. It called out to you.
Lila swallowed hard. She wanted to push him away or run or scream. But something in his eyes kept her rooted to the spot. Something ancient and strangely familiar.
Kael stepped closer his voice lowering. Tell me your name.
Lila.
He repeated it quietly as if testing the shape of it. Lila. Your presence soothes the hourglass. That is why it awakened for you.
The room fell silent.
Then the hourglass pulsed again.
Kael inhaled sharply. The veil between our times is thin. Too thin. Something is pulling at it.
Lila felt fear twist inside her. What is happening
Kael turned toward the window his golden eyes glowing brighter. A crack in time. Something is trying to break through. Something that should not.
Lila stepped beside him looking outside. The fog was thicker than she had ever seen swallowing rooftops and drifting like a living creature.
Kael murmured softly. They sense the hourglass is active.
They Who is they
Kael looked at her with a seriousness that sent chills down her spine. Shades of time. Hungry remnants of moments that were never meant to exist. They feed on living years on futures and memories alike.
Lila felt her breath hitch. And they want mine
Kael nodded. They want yours because you awakened the bridge.
The floorboards creaked suddenly. A cold wind swept through the room though the window was shut. The lights flickered.
Kael grabbed her hand. You must stay close.
Lila felt electricity run through her veins when he touched her. Something deep inside her shifted like a memory she could not place.
The lights turned off.
A whisper filled the room. Long stretched unnatural.
Lila
Lila squeezed Kaels hand trembling. What do we do
Kael lifted his other hand and a soft golden light formed in his palm illuminating the room. The shadows twisted violently recoiling from the light like living creatures.
Kael pulled her behind him. Do not let go of me. I can keep them back but only if you remain connected to me.
Lila nodded barely holding back tears. She followed him as he led her out of the bedroom down the hallway and toward the front door. But when they reached the living room everything changed.
The air rippled.
The furniture trembled.
Then a gaping rift tore open across the wall revealing swirling darkness.
Kael cursed under his breath. They are stronger than I thought.
A shapeless shadow lunged from the rift. Kael pushed Lila aside sweeping his hand through the air. A blast of golden energy struck the shadow sending it backward into the darkness. But more shadows crawled out slithering toward them.
Kael tightened his grip on her hand. Lila listen to me. You must command the hourglass.
I do not know how
Your soul knows. Trust it.
Her heart pounded wildly but she forced herself forward. The hourglass on her desk began to glow brighter even from across the house. The light pulled her like a tether drawing her toward it.
Kael fought beside her striking shadow after shadow while guiding her through the collapsing hallway. The house creaked under the strain of bending time.
Lila reached the room. The hourglass vibrated humming like a heartbeat.
Kael shouted behind her Lila turn it
She grabbed the hourglass with shaking hands and flipped it over.
The golden sand finally fell.
The world exploded with light.
Shadows screamed.
The rift slammed shut.
Silence.
When the light faded Kael was on the floor breathing heavily. Lila dropped beside him touching his shoulder. Kael are you alright
He opened his eyes slowly. His glow had dimmed but a faint smile touched his lips. You did it. You commanded time.
Lila felt her chest tighten with relief. But she noticed something else. Kaels body seemed faint almost transparent.
Kael She whispered. You are fading.
He looked at her with sadness. The hourglass is returning me to my time. The link will close soon.
Lila felt panic surge through her. Wait. You cannot just leave. I do not understand what is happening. I do not understand us.
Kael sat up cupping her face gently with both hands. His touch was warm soft and desperate. Lila I was never meant to remain here. But the hourglass bonded us. That bond may call me back again. Or it may call you to me.
Her heart raced at the thought. When
He shook his head. I do not know. Time bends differently for us.
Lila swallowed hard tears rising. I do not want this to end.
Kael leaned closer resting his forehead against hers. His voice was barely above a whisper. Neither do I.
The golden light around him grew brighter pulling him away.
Lila grabbed his shirt holding him tight. Kael please
He brushed his thumb over her cheek slowly memorizing her face. I will find you Lila Rowan. Across centuries if I must. The hourglass will guide me back to you.
Then he vanished into light.
The room became still.
Lila fell to her knees holding the hourglass against her chest tears streaming silently. The golden sand inside glowed softly pulsing like a heartbeat.
Kael
She whispered to the empty room.
I will wait.
