The Garden Where Time Waited for Her
The ancient garden behind the abandoned mansion had always been forbidden. Everyone in the quiet town of Hollowmere spoke of strange lights drifting through its trees at night and whispers that rose from the vines when no wind was present. Children dared one another to approach the rusted gates but none ever stepped inside. The adults refused to speak of the place except in hushed tones. They said the garden had been cursed long ago that a tragedy took place there and that no living soul should enter.
But to Seraphine Vale the garden was not frightening. It was beautiful. She had painted it from the outside many times its iron gates wrapped in old ivy its stone path buried beneath years of leaves and its tall roses frozen in perpetual bloom. Ever since she was young she felt an unexplainable pull toward the place as if something beyond the gate waited just for her. Her grandmother once warned her to stay away but never gave a reason. Seraphine always sensed there was a story hidden behind her grandmothers silence.
On the evening her life changed forever Seraphine walked to the mansion after a long day working at the town library. The sky was painted in soft pink and gold as the sun sank behind the hills. She held her sketchbook in one hand planning to sit outside the gate as she had done countless times before.
But this time the gate was open.
She stopped breathing for a moment. The heavy iron doors which had always been sealed shut hung slightly ajar. Leaves rustled beneath her feet as she stepped closer. Fear and curiosity fought within her chest. She looked around but the street was empty.
She whispered softly. Is someone there
Silence answered her. Yet she felt watched in a way that did not frighten her but strangely warmed her.
A faint glow shimmered within the garden near the hedge maze. Seraphine tightened her grip on her sketchbook and slowly pushed the gate open. It creaked like a long sigh of relief. The garden path was overgrown but the roses glowed faintly as if lit from within. Their petals sparkled like dew touched by moonlight.
The air grew warmer as she stepped inside. The wind seemed to hush. The world felt suspended like a held breath.
Seraphine walked deeper until she reached the center of the garden where a large stone fountain stood dry and cracked. Vines wrapped around its base. She set her sketchbook on the fountain edge and reached out to touch a glowing rose.
The moment her fingers brushed its petals time itself seemed to bend.
A warm breeze swept through the garden carrying the scent of night blooming flowers. The air shimmered. The roses brightened. The trees straightened as if waking from a long sleep. The cracked fountain began to repair itself threads of stone weaving together until it looked whole again. Water flowed from the top sparkling like starlight.
Seraphine stepped back in shock. What is happening
A voice like velvet spoke behind her. The garden remembers you.
She spun around. A man stood beneath the arch of wisteria flowers. He was tall with dark hair that fell around his face like silk. His eyes glowed a deep gold. His clothing was old fashioned soft and flowing as if from another time. He was breathtaking and yet he radiated sadness like an aura.
Seraphine whispered. Who are you
The man walked toward her slowly his steps silent on the stone path. When he reached her the roses around them brightened as if greeting him.
My name is Alistair he said softly. And this garden once belonged to me.
Seraphine swallowed hard her heartbeat loud in her ears. This place has been abandoned for a hundred years.
For you perhaps Alistair replied. But within these walls time moves differently. For me only a single hour has passed since the moment everything ended.
She trembled. I do not understand.
He lifted his hand gently but stopped before touching her as though afraid she might vanish. This garden was once filled with life he said. It was a sanctuary for the gifted for those who held magic within their souls. I was chosen to guard it. And you Seraphine you once walked here with me.
Her breath caught. We knew each other
Alistair nodded his expression filled with deep longing. Long before you were born in this world. Your soul was bound to this garden. You were the heart of it. Every flower bloomed by your presence. Every moment of peace existed because of your light.
Seraphine shook her head. That cannot be true. I am just a librarian. I have no magic.
But you do he whispered. You simply forgot. When darkness entered the garden when the curse fell when I failed to protect you your spirit fled into another lifetime. This one. And I was trapped here in the frozen hour waiting for the moment your soul would return.
Seraphine felt her knees weaken. She clutched the edge of the fountain. Why would I leave Why would I abandon this place
Because you were dying Alistair replied voice cracking with guilt. I made a choice. I broke the rules of the realm. I used forbidden magic to send your spirit into another life so that you might survive. The curse trapped me here sealed in the moment you vanished. I have been waiting ever since.
Seraphine stared at him unable to breathe. The shadows of his words pressed on her heart. She looked around and realized the garden was full of longing. The vines seemed to reach toward her the glowing roses leaned in her direction as if recognizing her.
She whispered. How could I be the one who kept this place alive I cannot even remember my past.
Alistair stepped closer his golden eyes tender. Let me show you.
He gently touched her forehead. Warmth surged through her body. Images flooded her mind. She saw herself dressed in flowing white walking through this garden with laughter in her voice. She saw herself touching flowers that bloomed instantly. She saw Alistair beside her smiling with love so deep it hurt. She saw the moment darkness entered the garden the sky cracking with black fire. She saw Alistair shielding her with his magic desperate to save her. She saw the world shatter into fragments of light.
Seraphine gasped and staggered back. The memories vanished but the emotions remained. Sorrow love fear longing.
Alistair looked at her gently. You were my heart. And without you the garden fell asleep.
Seraphine touched her chest. If I was so important why do I feel like nothing now Why do I feel empty
Because your power has been sealed he explained. And the curse still lingers. But now that you have returned the garden will begin to live again. And so will you.
Before she could respond the sky above them darkened. A cold wind rushed through the garden. The roses dimmed. The fountain water stopped flowing. The trees groaned.
A voice filled with venom whispered from the shadows. So she returns at last.
Seraphine froze. Alistair immediately stepped in front of her his body tense.
Show yourself Alistair commanded.
A figure emerged from the far side of the garden formed of swirling black smoke. Its eyes glowed crimson. Its presence drained the warmth from the air.
Seraphine felt fear coil in her stomach. What is that
The curse given form Alistair said quietly. The one who destroyed everything.
The shadow laughed. You thought she would come back to you guardian Fool. She belongs to the void now.
Seraphine stepped behind Alistair trembling. The shadow drifted toward them stretching its dark limbs. Powerless Alistair whispered. With your magic sealed I cannot defeat it.
Seraphine closed her eyes her heart pounding. She felt inside herself searching for something anything. A warmth flickered faintly like a candle struggling against wind.
She looked at the fountain water that had once sparkled because of her. She remembered the feeling of flowers blooming at her touch. She remembered the look in Alistairs eyes when he saw her.
Love she whispered. That was my power was it not
Alistair looked back at her startled. Yes. Your magic was the magic of life. The magic of creation. The magic of love.
The shadow lunged forward with a roar. Seraphine stepped out from behind Alistair. Her entire body trembled but her voice remained steady.
Stop she shouted.
Light burst from her hands. Soft at first then brighter. The shadow shrieked and recoiled. The roses awakened glowing again. The fountain flowed once more.
Seraphine felt the warmth growing stronger spreading through her veins like liquid sunlight. Memories returned in flashes. A lifetime in another world. A bond with the guardian who loved her beyond reason. A garden that lived because she lived.
She lifted her hands again. The light grew until it surrounded the entire garden. The shadow screamed one last time before dissolving like smoke under sunlight.
Silence filled the garden.
The roses glowed brighter their petals shining like tiny moons. The trees straightened fully awake. The air felt warm again.
Seraphine collapsed to her knees breathing hard. Alistair rushed to her side catching her before she fell.
You did it he whispered voice full of awe and relief. You awakened your power.
Seraphine leaned into him exhausted. I do not understand. I was so afraid.
Alistair brushed her hair gently. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is choosing to protect what matters even when you are afraid.
She lifted her gaze to meet his. And what matters to you
Alistair cupped her face. You. Always you.
Her heart softened. She felt pulled to him by a force older than her current life. She remembered standing in this garden with him long ago promising to return to him no matter what fate tried to break them.
Her voice trembled. If I stay here what will happen to my life in this world
Alistair smiled sadly. That life will continue without you. Time moves differently in this garden. But you must choose. Stay and reclaim your place as the heart of the realm. Or leave and return to the life that has sheltered you.
Seraphine looked around. The garden hummed with life around her calling out with love trust and longing. She turned to Alistair the guardian who had waited a century for her return.
Her decision came softly but firmly. I belong here. With you.
Alistairs eyes filled with warmth. Then let this be your home again.
He lifted her into his arms and as he did the entire garden erupted in light. The vines bloomed with brilliant colors. The fountain sparkled with silver water. The sky above shimmered like dawn breaking after a long endless night.
Seraphine felt her magic return fully flowing through her like a river of warmth. She pressed her forehead against Alistairs.
I remember you she whispered. And I remember loving you.
Alistair closed his eyes in relief. Then the garden can live again.
And beneath the starlit sky of the restored sanctuary Seraphine and Alistair shared the first kiss of their reunited souls the garden blooming around them as if celebrating a love strong enough to outlast time itself.
