Paranormal Romance

Shadows Beneath The Aurora Sky

The first night the aurora returned to Winterhollow was the night Selene Ward felt the world shift beneath her feet. The lights spread across the sky like rivers of green and soft rose drifting in waves above the snow covered valley. Selene stood at the edge of the frozen clearing her breath forming pale clouds as she watched the colors pulse like a heartbeat. Winterhollow had always been a quiet place a village tucked far from cities and noise but the aurora had not appeared here for seventeen years. Her parents once told her the lights were a blessing from the spirits of the north. Others whispered the opposite that the aurora signaled a door opening between the living and the dead. Selene believed none of it until that night.

The wind hushed and the snow fell in slow delicate spirals. Selene hugged her coat closer around her body and turned to leave when she heard it. A voice. A soft male whisper brushing against her ear like warm breath. Selene. Do not be afraid.

She spun around her boots sliding slightly on the ice. There was no one behind her. No footprints in the fresh snow. Only the shimmer of the aurora dancing across the frozen lake. Her heart pounded and she stood perfectly still listening. The voice was gone replaced by a strange hum ringing in the air as if the world were holding its breath.

Selene swallowed and took a cautious step forward. Hello she called her voice trembling despite her attempt to sound brave. Is someone there.

The wind shifted and the snow swirled again. This time a figure appeared at the far side of the clearing. A tall male silhouette standing just beyond the edge of the glowing ice. Selene froze unable to look away. The figure stepped closer and as he entered the light of the aurora she saw him clearly. His hair was white like fresh snow yet somehow radiant. His eyes glowed a deep blue with tiny crystalline reflections. His clothing looked ancient layered with patterns that resembled northern runes. He walked with a grace so fluid it seemed unreal.

Selene whispered Who are you.

The man stopped only a few steps away. My name is Aiden. I am a guardian of the aurora. You should not be here alone. The lights tonight are not the same as those from your childhood.

Selene stared at him her mind trying to make sense of what she was seeing. Guardian. Aurora. The words felt strange on her tongue. She forced herself to ask What do you mean. Why are you here. Why did you call my name.

Aiden studied her with an expression of intense recognition mixed with sorrow. Because your presence awakened the rift. And because I have waited for you for longer than you can imagine.

Selene felt a chill run through her. I do not understand. I have never met you.

Aiden stepped closer his voice soft like falling snow. You have not met me in this lifetime.

Selene took a step back overwhelmed. She looked around needing grounding something real. The snow was real. The cold was real. Her heartbeat was real. But Aiden seemed like something born from the aurora itself. She whispered What are you really.

Aiden hesitated then answered in a quiet voice heavy with truth. I was once human. But when I died my spirit was claimed by the northern veil. I became bound to the aurora to guard the passage between worlds. And tonight that passage trembles because of you.

Selene shook her head her mind reeling. I am just a normal person. I do not have anything to do with spirits or guardians or passages.

Aiden looked at her with a gentleness that almost broke her. You are not just anyone Selene Ward. The aurora answered your soul. Only those connected to the veil can hear my voice or see me in this form. You were born with a light inside you. A rare and dangerous gift.

Selene felt heat rise in her chest a mix of fear and bewildered anger. I never asked for this. I never wanted anything like this.

I know Aiden said quietly. But the veil does not choose wrong. And something ancient has awakened beneath the ice tonight because it senses you.

As if summoned by his words the frozen lake cracked with a loud echoing sound. Selene gasped stumbling as the ice split revealing fractures that glowed with a deeper blue light. Strange shadows moved beneath the surface swirling like dark serpents.

Aiden moved closer placing himself between her and the lake. His voice turned sharp. We have to leave now. The ancient wraith has sensed your light. If it fully awakens it will tear through this world and the one beyond.

Selene looked at him horrified. Why me. Why is it after me.

Because you have something it needs to break free. Your soul resonates with the veil. You could open the passage if pushed hard enough by fear or pain.

Selene shook her head trembling. I cannot do this. I want to go home.

Aiden reached out gently brushing his fingers along her cheek. His touch was cold yet strangely comforting. I will protect you. I swear I will not let anything reach you. But you must trust me. And you must stay close.

Selene closed her eyes trying to steady her breathing. When she opened them Aiden was still watching her his blue eyes reflecting every flicker of the aurora above. She nodded slowly. I trust you. Even if none of this makes sense. Even if I should run far away.

Aiden offered his hand. Then come. We do not have much time.

She took his hand and felt a surge of warmth shoot through her arm despite his cold skin. The moment their hands met the aurora brightened glowing so intensely it illuminated the entire forest. Aiden looked startled for the first time. Your connection is stronger than I believed. This could change everything.

They ran across the snow as the cracking of the lake grew louder behind them. Selene looked back and saw the shadow rising like a towering column of black mist its edges spiraling with hungry tendrils. Its eyes glowed red like deep coals burning with ancient rage.

Selene clutched Aiden’s arm. What is that thing.

An ancient wraith of the northern realm Aiden answered without slowing. A creature born from despair and suffering. It was sealed beneath this valley centuries ago but the aurora weakened recently. And now it seeks what it has long been denied. Freedom.

Selene felt the cold creep deeper into her bones. How do we stop it.

Aiden stopped suddenly pulling her close to a stone pillar hidden in the forest. He touched the runes etched into it glowing faint blue. There is a way. But it requires strength from us both. And a bond that must be willingly formed.

Selene whispered What kind of bond.

Aiden looked away his expression heavy with something like anguish. A soul bond. A connection strong enough to bridge life and spirit. But it is dangerous. If we fail your soul could be trapped in the veil forever.

Selene felt her pulse race. But if we do nothing the wraith destroys everything.

Yes.

Selene took a step closer to him her breath visible in the cold. Aiden. Look at me.

He looked up eyes swirling with conflict.

I am not afraid of bonding with you she said slowly. I am afraid of losing everything. And you are the only one who can help me. So tell me how to do it.

Aiden looked at her as if she had unlocked something inside him long locked away. His voice softened. You truly would risk your soul for this valley.

Selene shook her head. Not for the valley. For the people I love. And for you.

Aiden’s eyes widened. A slow fragile emotion spread across his face one he had not shown in centuries. Selene felt her chest tighten at the sight of it.

The bond happens through intention Aiden said quietly. You must focus on your heart your memories your light. And allow me to share it. We will become linked. Our power combined.

Selene nodded. Then let us begin.

Aiden reached out placing his hand over her heart. His palm glowed with icy blue light. Selene mirrored the gesture placing her hand over his chest. His form solidified beneath her touch warmer than before. A gentle pulse moved between them.

Close your eyes Aiden whispered.

Selene obeyed and felt a warmth spread through her body flowing outward like sunlight. Memories surfaced her childhood her laughter her grief the faces she cherished. Aiden absorbed each memory with a tenderness that made her breath tremble.

He whispered Selene you are brighter than the aurora itself.

The world flashed.

When she opened her eyes their hands glowed with intertwined streams of light wrapping them together. The aurora intensified above swirling directly toward them. The ground shook with a thunderous roar. The wraith burst from the trees screaming with fury.

Aiden shouted Hold on to me. Do not let the fear control you.

Selene tightened her grip as the wraith lunged. A barrier of blue and white light erupted around them sending shockwaves of energy across the snow. The creature recoiled shrieking as its form cracked.

Aiden cried Selene focus on your hope. On every reason you fight.

Selene opened her heart letting her emotions flow. Her memories collided with the power surging between them. Light burst from her chest merging with Aiden’s forming a massive wave of radiant energy that struck the wraith head on. The creature’s scream shook the sky as it tore apart disintegrating into shards of darkness.

The world fell silent.

Selene collapsed into the snow gasping. Aiden knelt beside her his form flickering like a dying flame. Selene grabbed his arm panicking. Aiden no. Please do not fade.

Aiden smiled softly though his eyes reflected sorrow. The bond saved this world. But it also anchored my spirit to your realm. My duty to the veil is broken. And without its power I cannot remain here for long.

Selene felt her heart crack. So you will vanish. After everything we shared.

Aiden cupped her face gently. I was never meant to meet you Selene. But meeting you has been the greatest gift of my existence. I will fade but the bond we formed will protect this valley forever. And a part of me will remain with you. In your heart. In the aurora.

Tears streamed down Selene’s cheeks as she whispered I wish I could have met you when you were alive.

Aiden smiled with bittersweet warmth. And I wish I could have lived a life with you beneath the aurora sky.

His form dissolved into countless specks of glowing blue drifting upward carried by the northern wind. Selene reached out her fingers touching the last shimmer before it disappeared.

The aurora above shifted one final time forming a shape of two intertwined lights before softening back into its gentle dance.

Selene whispered into the night I remember you Aiden.

And whenever the aurora returned she felt him there a quiet presence watching guiding loving through the veil between worlds.
