Lost Lantern Garden
The wind blew across the abandoned coastal town of Arlen Cove carrying with it the scent of seawater and a faint trace of something unfamiliar something like wet lantern paper long forgotten. Elira Maren a quiet seventeen year old who had grown up with strange recurring dreams about a glowing garden visited the town for the first time with a sense of unease. She had always felt drawn to abandoned places yet this one felt different from the moment she stepped off the old bus.
The streets were empty but not in a normal way. Every wooden house felt paused as if waiting for someone to return. She looked around trying to match the scenery with the images from her dreams but nothing aligned until she walked deeper into the heart of the town. The first clue appeared when she noticed a silver blue lantern lying on a broken fountain. It looked newly placed despite the dust surrounding it.
Elira approached slowly and whispered What are you doing here as if the object could answer. She reached for it and the moment her fingers brushed its surface a cold voice spoke behind her. You should not touch that.
She spun around startled. A tall boy stood at the edge of the street wearing an old styled navy jacket that did not match anything modern. His eyes were pale like moonlight and his expression unreadable. Elira stepped back unsure if she should run or question him. Who are you she asked.
The boy hesitated then said My name is Kael. I live here.
Elira looked around at the silent town. No one lives here this place is abandoned. Kael gave a small almost sad smile. It is abandoned but I have not gone.
Her confusion deepened. His tone felt too heavy for an ordinary explanation. Kael walked toward the lantern and knelt beside it. This belonged to someone important someone who disappeared long ago. The lanterns are part of the reason Arlen Cove became what it is now.
Elira watched him carefully. Something about him felt out of place not dangerous but distant like he was a memory shaped into a person. She asked If no one lives here why are there new traces like this lantern.
Kael lifted the lantern. Because this town repeats its past every night. The lantern appears for the same reason. It is searching.
Elira frowned. Searching for what.
Kael stared at her with calm steady eyes. For the girl who can end the loop.
His words made no sense yet a part of her heart clenched as if she had been waiting to hear them. Elira stepped closer trying to understand. What loop.
Kael motioned for her to follow him. They walked through narrow alleys passing weathered houses and empty storefronts until they reached the entrance of an overgrown path. Beyond it lay a forest of twisted branches and pale flowers glowing faintly under the fading daylight.
This place is called the Lantern Garden Kael explained. It appears in your dreams because you are connected to the town. You felt the pull did you not.
Elira admitted quietly I have dreamed of this place my whole life but it never made sense. Why me.
Kael paused then replied Because you are tied to someone who once lived here. Someone who tried to save this town but failed. Every night the garden relights itself trying to reach the one who can set everything free.
They entered the garden and the air changed immediately. The flowers hummed softly like distant music. Dozens of lanterns hung from branches glowing with blue white light. Elira could feel their warmth rising like faint heartbeats. She whispered It is beautiful.
Kael answered There was a time when this garden protected everyone. The lanterns carried hopes of the townspeople and when they shone together the town prospered. But one night someone extinguished them trying to take their power. The town fell into silence and the lanterns trapped the memories of everyone who lived here. Now they replay fragments of the past in endless cycles.
Elira touched a lantern gently. It flickered and an image shimmered inside. She saw a researcher working late in a study writing furiously in a journal. The image dissolved quickly but she recognized his face though she could not explain how. Kael noticed her reaction. You remember him do you not.
Elira breathed shakily I have dreamed of him too. He always looked sad.
That man Kael said quietly was my brother Ardyn. He tried to stop the one who destroyed the lanterns but he vanished before he could restore them. The town wants to show you the truth because you and Ardyn share something. You carry the same connection to the lanterns.
Elira felt a pull in her chest like a memory awakening. Why are you telling me this now.
Kael replied Because the lanterns chose tonight. The loop is weakening. You are the only one who can reach the final lantern the source of everything.
They walked deeper into the garden until they reached an enormous tree in the center its branches heavy with fading lanterns. At its base stood a single lantern glowing brighter than the rest. Elira approached it feeling her heartbeat race. It was the same lantern from her dreams the one she had always feared and longed for.
Kael stepped beside her. This is the Heart Lantern. It holds the towns final memory. If you can open it you will discover the truth behind Arlen Coves collapse and perhaps free the souls trapped here.
Elira looked at him suddenly realizing something. Kael you said souls. Are you also trapped.
Kael lowered his eyes. I died the night the garden fell. But the lanterns kept me here. I have waited for someone who could finish what Ardyn began. I have waited for you.
Elira felt her chest tighten. Not in a romantic way but in a deep ache for someone who had carried loneliness longer than she could imagine. She whispered softly I am sorry Kael.
He shook his head. Do not be. You came. That is what matters.
Elira lifted the Heart Lantern. It pulsed warm light into her hands. As she opened it the garden exploded with a surge of images. She saw Ardyn desperately trying to relight the lanterns. She saw the figure who tried to steal their power a man with eyes burning with envy. She saw Kael running toward his brother to protect him. She saw the explosion of light that consumed the town leaving only memories behind.
When the vision faded Elira whispered Ardyn was trying to protect everyone. He did not fail. Something else trapped the town.
Kael nodded. Yes. And now you can release it.
Elira held the lantern high and its light spread through the garden. Every lantern brightened glowing warm gold. She felt the energy rush around her swirling like a wave. The town sighed as if taking its first breath in decades.
Kaels form began to flicker. He looked at her with grateful calmness. You freed them Elira. You freed me.
Elira stepped forward her voice trembling. Will I see you again.
Kael smiled gently. Not here. But the garden will remember you. And so will I.
His figure dissolved into soft light rising into the glowing canopy. Moments later the lanterns dimmed to a peaceful steady glow. The town around them no longer felt frozen. It felt resting content.
Elira walked out of the garden slowly carrying the Heart Lantern which had turned silver. She whispered Thank you Kael then continued down the path toward the bus stop knowing that even if the town was silent her journey with it had only begun.
The lantern in her hands glowed softly as if listening.
