Echoes Beneath The Moonlit Manor
The first night Aurelia Thorn arrived at the abandoned manor, the moon hung low and pale over the jagged hills of Ravenshade. A cold wind curled around the broken stone walls as though the house itself were exhaling after a long sleep. Aurelia stood before the collapsing gates, her suitcase in hand and her heart pounding with restless determination. She had come for answers. Answers no one in the living world wanted to give her.
The manor had belonged to her great aunt Celestine, a woman shrouded in rumors of witchcraft, prophecy, and death. Celestine had vanished twenty years earlier, leaving behind a legacy of fear and unanswered questions. People whispered that she had not died, only crossed somewhere beyond. Aurelia had grown up hearing the stories. She had also grown up hearing a voice call her name at night, a voice that sounded like wind through broken glass. Tonight, she had finally followed it.
The gate groaned as she pushed it open. The gardens were wild, tangled with vines that twisted like skeletal fingers. The air felt heavy, as though drenched with memories. Aurelia walked the cracked path toward the manor door. The moonlight painted the stone walls in shades of silver and ash. She felt the quiet watching her.
Inside, dust coated the floors. Cobwebs draped over faded portraits lining the hall. The air smelled of old paper and forgotten magic. Aurelia set her lantern atop a half collapsed table and whispered into the vast empty space.
I am here. Whatever you have been calling me for, I am here.
For a moment nothing happened. Then a soft echo drifted across the room like a breath brushing her ear.
Aurelia.
She spun around. Her lantern flickered. Shadows thickened along the walls. She drew a long breath and steadied herself. The voice was the same one she had heard since childhood, gentle and chilling at the same time. She lifted the lantern higher and stepped deeper into the manor.
She reached the main hall, where a grand staircase curved upward, its railings broken in several places. The large chandelier hung crooked, its crystals clinking faintly as though stirred by invisible hands. Aurelia felt a chill run down her spine.
Show yourself, she whispered.
A faint glow took shape at the top of the stairs. At first it seemed like only a shimmer of moonlight. Then it grew stronger, forming the outline of a man. Tall. Broad shouldered. His hair silver as winter frost, his eyes glowing a soft blue light. He looked almost living except for the way the light shimmered through his shape.
Do not be afraid, the ghost said in a voice like wind moving through ancient halls.
Aurelia locked her gaze onto his ethereal form. I am not afraid. Who are you
The ghost descended the stairs with slow graceful steps. When he reached the bottom, the air grew colder. His voice softened. My name is Thalen. I have been bound to this manor for a very long time.
Aurelia swallowed hard, forcing her voice to stay steady. Were you the one calling me
Thalen looked at her with an expression that mixed sorrow and wonder. Yes. You are the only one who could hear me. You and Celestine.
Aurelias heart tightened. You knew my great aunt
Thalen nodded. Celestine and I were connected long before she vanished. She was gifted, like you. She could cross the boundary between the living and the unseen.
Aurelia felt her pulse stutter. My entire life people have told me I was imagining things. But I always felt something. Heard things. Saw things. What am I exactly
Thalen stepped closer. His presence brushed her skin like a cool breeze. You are a conduit. One who hears the echoes of the spirits. Celestine heard us too. She helped those trapped in the in between. Until the night she crossed too far.
What happened to her Tell me everything.
Thalen looked away, his form flickering. The air thickened with tension. Celestine tried to free the spirit who haunts the lower halls. A spirit powerful enough to tear the veil between worlds. She wanted to save him. But the veil caught her instead. And now she is trapped.
Aurelia felt her breath catch. So she is still here
Thalens eyes softened. Not here. But not gone. She lingers somewhere between. And you, Aurelia, you are the only one who can reach her.
Aurelia stared at him, the weight of his words settling heavily over her. Why me
Because you carry her gift. And because the veil has been whispering your name since the day you were born.
Aurelias throat tightened. She took a long breath and steadied herself. Then tell me what I need to do.
Thalens form flickered again. His expression was a mix of pain and admiration. You are brave. Perhaps braver than Celestine. But what you seek will not be easy. The spirit in the lower halls is restless. Dangerous. It has waited for decades to tear free.
Aurelia clenched her fists. I have to try. I cannot leave Celestine trapped there alone.
Thalen hesitated. There is something you must understand. If you open the veil, it will not only free Celestine. It will free me too. I have waited for so long. But once freed, I cannot remain here. I cannot stay with you.
Aurelias breath hitched. She had known Thalen for barely minutes, yet something in her chest tightened with a deep strange ache. Why does that matter so much Why does the thought of losing you feel wrong
Thalen looked at her, his glowing eyes filled with centuries of loneliness. Because our spirits are linked. You heard me long before you knew my name. And I felt your presence long before you stepped foot in this house.
Aurelias heart pounded. That does not make sense.
Thalen reached out his hand. A faint glowing trace hovered an inch above her skin. I do not know the reason. Only that our fates are bound. And once you free me, that bond might tear apart.
Aurelia looked into his luminous eyes and whispered, I cannot lose someone I have only just found.
Thalen gave her a sad gentle smile. You cannot lose what was never yours.
Aurelias breath trembled. Then teach me how to open the veil.
Thalen nodded slowly. Very well. But remember this. Once you begin, the manor will not remain silent. It will fight you.
Aurelia lifted her lantern. Let it try.
Thalen turned and led her through the dark halls of the manor. They passed shattered furniture, torn tapestries, and dusty staircases. Each step echoed like a drumbeat. Aurelia felt the entire house watching. Listening. Waiting.
They reached a heavy door in the basement. The wood was dark and damp, carved with strange swirling patterns. Thalen stopped. Beyond this door lies the crossing chamber. The place where Celestine made her last attempt.
Aurelia pressed her palm against the cold wood. It vibrated faintly like something breathing behind it. She pushed it open.
The chamber beyond was circular. A giant mirror stood in the center, cracked down the middle like a wounded eye. Strange symbols covered the floor. The air buzzed with electricity and the faint hum of distant voices.
Thalen stood behind her. The mirror is the gateway. Celestine used it to speak to the spirits. But something pulled her through.
Aurelia approached the mirror. Her reflection flickered as though it were underwater. She felt drawn to it.
What do I do
Place your hand on the glass and call her name. But be ready. The spirit below will hear you.
Aurelia swallowed her fear. She lifted her hand. The glass felt warm under her palm.
Celestine. Celestine Thorn. If you hear me, come to me.
The mirror pulsed with light. A distorted image formed within. A woman with long white hair and dark eyes. Celestine. Her voice came like a whisper through water.
Aurelia. You should not have come.
Aurelias breath hitched. I am here to save you.
Celestine shook her head. No. The veil is unstable. The spirit is restless. You must leave.
I will not leave you here.
Behind Aurelia, the chamber shook. Dust fell from the ceiling. Shadows swirled along the floor.
Thalen shouted, Aurelia step back now
But the mirror flared before she could move. A powerful force burst from it, knocking her off her feet. Her lantern crashed to the ground and extinguished. The chamber plunged into cold blue light.
A towering shadow rose from the mirror. A figure with hollow eyes and twisted limbs. The trapped spirit. Its voice thundered like a storm.
You dare open the gate mortal
Aurelia scrambled backward. Thalen moved in front of her, his ghostly form glowing with fierce intensity.
You will not touch her Thalen growled.
The spirit laughed, a sound that cracked the air. You are nothing but a forgotten echo.
It struck Thalen with a wave of darkness. He staggered but did not fall. Aurelia leaped to her feet.
Leave him alone she shouted.
The spirit lunged at her. Thalen moved faster than she could see. He slammed into the spirit, light against shadow. The two forces collided, sending waves of energy ripping through the chamber.
Aurelia felt the symbols on the floor glowing beneath her feet. Celestines faint voice echoed from the mirror.
Aurelia listen to me. You must finish what I started. Call the spirits of the veil. They will bind the shadow.
How
Speak the words within your heart. The veil listens to emotion more than language.
Aurelia closed her eyes. She felt fear. But stronger than that, she felt love. For Celestine. For Thalen. For the truth she had chased her entire life. She lifted her voice, steady and strong.
Spirits that wander, hear me. Bind the darkness. Protect the lost. Let the light rise.
The chamber erupted in blinding white light. The shadow spirit shrieked, writhing as threads of silver bound its limbs. Thalen held it down, his glowing form burning brighter.
Aurelia reached toward the mirror. Celestine appeared clearer now, her smile soft with pride.
Aurelia. You did it.
Come through. Please.
Celestine shook her head. My time is done. But yours is just beginning.
The mirror cracked further. Light poured out, swirling around Celestine like a cocoon. She whispered one last time.
Live well my dear.
Then she dissolved into shimmering dust that drifted into Aurelias hands before fading.
The mirror went dark.
The shadow spirit vanished.
Thalens form dimmed and wavered. The binding is complete. The spirits are free. Including me.
Aurelia turned to him, heart aching. So this is goodbye.
Thalen looked at her with eyes full of longing. If I stay, I will fade. If I leave, I will finally rest.
Aurelia felt tears well. I do not want you to go.
He brushed a ghostly hand along her cheek. You were my light in endless darkness. For that, I will always be bound to you even if we walk different realms.
Aurelia closed her eyes as he leaned his forehead gently against hers. His voice was a whisper of moonlight.
When the manor calls, I will return.
Then his form dissolved into soft silver light, drifting upward like a forgotten star rising toward dawn.
Aurelia stood alone in the silent chamber, her heart heavy yet full. She looked into the cracked mirror. Her reflection stared back not weak, not afraid, but strong. A conduit. A guardian of the veil.
She whispered into the still air, Thalen. I will wait.
And somewhere deep in the quiet halls of the manor, the softest echo answered her.
