Paranormal Romance

Echoes Of The Forgotten Wolves

The first snow of Winterfall Mountain drifted across the sky in slow silent spirals as if the world were holding its breath. Mira Halden stood at the edge of the forest listening to the distant howl that had echoed every night since her return. It was a sound both mournful and familiar, as though someone from her memories was calling her name through wind and ice. She tightened her scarf and stepped deeper into the woods, feeling the old pull in her chest that she had tried for years to ignore.

Mira had once lived in these mountains before tragedy forced her away. When she was fifteen she had disappeared for three days in the forest only to be found unconscious at dawn with no memory of what happened. Her family moved her to the city after that, fearing the forest had taken something from her. She had never stopped dreaming of the place. Dreams of silver eyes, soft whispers, warm shadows circling her like a promise she could not understand.

Now she was twenty five and back to settle the estate of her late uncle. She thought she could stay for only a week, finish the paperwork, and leave. But the moment she stepped into the forest the howl began again and her old forgotten instincts stirred awake.

Tonight the howl was closer.

Mira whispered, I remember you. But I do not know who you are.

The trees around her rustled though there was no wind. The night deepened. Snowflakes clung to her eyelashes. A soft crunch of footsteps echoed behind her. She turned slowly, heart thundering.

A wolf stood at the edge of the clearing. Massive. Silver fur shimmered beneath the moonlight. Eyes the color of molten gold. It was beautiful and frightening at the same time. It stared at her with an intelligence she had only seen in humans. A strange warmth swept through her chest as the wolf stepped forward.

Mira whispered, I know you.

The wolf stopped inches from her. Its breath fogged the air between them. Suddenly the wolf bowed its head as if greeting her. Mira reached out with a trembling hand. Before she could touch it the wolf stepped back.

Then the wolf began to change.

It happened slowly, gently, as though the forest itself was shaping the transformation. The silver fur darkened and folded inward. The limbs lengthened. The air shivered with a soft glow. When the light faded the wolf was no longer there.

A man stood in its place.

Tall. Broad shouldered. Strong. His hair was silver like the wolf’s fur. His eyes glowed faintly gold. His skin was pale but warm as he breathed slowly, studying Mira as if seeing her for the first time and yet remembering her forever.

Mira stumbled back. Her voice broke. You are real.

He nodded once. His voice was rough and deep. I am.

She stared at him unable to form words. The man stepped closer but stopped when she flinched.

Do not fear me, he said softly. I did not come to harm you. I came because you returned. I have waited for you for ten years.

Mira felt her breath catch. Her hand trembled as she lowered it slowly to her side. You waited for me. Why?

The man raised his eyes to hers and for a moment she felt the entire forest listening.

Because we are bound, Mira Halden.

Her heart lurched. Bound. The word echoed in her mind like a forgotten melody. She tried to speak but her voice was barely a whisper. Who are you?

He bowed his head slightly as if the answer carried sorrow. My name is Kael. The last guardian of the Winterfall Wolfborne. I am the remnant of a dying legacy. And you are the key to its survival.

Mira swallowed, confused, frightened, fascinated. I am just a woman. I do not understand what you want from me.

Kael held her gaze. I want nothing that is not already yours. But there is a truth you have forgotten. A truth I had no right to take from you.

Snow fell more heavily, swirling around them as if time had slowed.

Ten years ago, Kael said quietly, you entered the forest during the Blood Moon. You were young. You did not know what called you. But the forest knew. The Wolfborne knew. I found you near death. You had been hunted by things that should not exist. Beasts born of shadow and hunger. I saved you. And in saving you I broke our law.

Mira felt her chest tighten. What law?

Kael stepped toward her. His eyes dimmed with guilt. Wolves of my line are forbidden to bond with humans. Our souls are not meant to entwine. But you were dying. I could not leave you. I poured part of my essence into you to save your life. You became more than human that night. You became Wolfborne.

Mira staggered back. Her knees weakened. I am not a wolf.

Not a wolf, Kael said softly, but something close. You have our senses. Our instincts. Our bond. That is why you hear my call. That is why you returned.

Mira shook her head. Her voice cracked. I lost my memory of that night.

Because I took it from you, Kael whispered. Your mind could not bear the truth. And if you remembered too soon the beasts that hunted you would find you again. I blocked the memory. I waited for the day you would be strong enough to face it.

Mira’s breath caught in her throat. She felt anger, fear, sadness, and a strange rising warmth all at once. You should not have taken my memories.

Kael lowered his head. I know. And I regret it every moment. But I could not lose you.

The forest trembled. A low growl echoed through the trees. Mira stiffened.

Kael stepped closer placing himself between her and the shadows. They are coming. They smell your awakening. They know the bond has resurfaced.

She whispered shakily, What bond?

Kael turned to her. His golden eyes softened with something that made Mira’s heart tremble.

Our souls are bound. You are mine, Mira. And I am yours.

Her breath broke. That kind of bond was impossible. It could not be real. Yet she felt it. She felt the pull in her bones. The echo in her heart. The warmth inside her whenever she looked at him.

Suddenly the trees rattled violently. Dark figures appeared at the edge of the clearing. Tall twisted creatures with long limbs and hollow eyes like caves of shadows. Their mouths stretched too wide. Their movements unnatural and jerking like broken puppets.

Mira gasped. What are they?

Kael stepped forward. His voice turned sharp. Night feeders. They hunt Wolfborne. They want power. Your power.

The shadows lunged.

Kael shifted in an instant. His wolf form exploded outward in a burst of silver light. He slammed into the nearest creature sending it skidding across the snow. Teeth snapped. Claws tore at the ground. Kael fought with fury but there were too many.

Mira backed up breathing rapidly. Panic surged through her veins. She reached for a fallen branch though she knew it was useless against such monsters.

Kael roared in pain as one of the creatures struck him across the flank. Mira screamed his name. Her voice carried something powerful, something ancient. The ground shook beneath her. The air thickened with warmth.

Her heartbeat throbbed like a drum. Something inside her woke.

Light surged from her chest.

The creatures froze. Kael staggered back and stared at her with wide shocked eyes.

Mira’s body glowed faintly with silver threads that spread across her skin like flowing markings. Her vision sharpened. Her senses heightened. She heard every heartbeat in the forest. She smelled the darkness on the creatures. Power flooded her veins. She did not know how to use it, but instinct guided her.

The nearest creature lunged.

Mira thrust out her hand.

Silver light shot from her palm, striking the creature and turning it to ash. The others shrieked and fled into the forest disappearing as if swallowed by the night.

Silence returned. Snow fell softly again.

Kael shifted back into human form, bleeding slightly but breathing. He walked toward her slowly as if approaching a miracle.

Mira, he whispered. You awakened completely. I should have known your power would be greater than any Wolfborne before you.

She stared at her trembling hands. I did that. I do not understand.

Kael cupped her shoulders. His touch was warm despite the cold air. You were meant for this. You were meant for me. Our bond makes you stronger. You bring life into the forest. You are the last hope for the Wolfborne.

Mira felt tears gather in her eyes. She whispered, I am frightened.

Kael gently brushed a tear from her cheek. His voice softened completely. I know. You do not need to walk this path alone. I will guide you. I will fight with you. I will never leave you again.

Mira looked into his glowing golden eyes and felt the bond pull between them like an invisible thread tying their souls.

Kael said quietly, Our connection is not just fate. It is love, Mira. I loved you the moment I saved you. I loved you when I watched you grow from afar. I loved you even when I was forbidden to.

Her breath quivered. Kael stepped closer until their foreheads touched. Heat spread through her veins. Her heart raced with something fierce and tender. She whispered back, I think I loved you long before I understood why.

He smiled softly against her skin. Then stay. Stay and fight beside me. Stay and save our kind. Stay and let me love you openly.

Mira nodded slowly. Yes. I will stay.

The forest glowed faintly around them as if blessing their vow. Kael wrapped his arms around her, drawing her close as the snow fell gently. And in the cold silence of Winterfall Mountain a bond long broken began to heal, a love long forgotten began to rise, and two souls bound by fate stood together ready to face the darkness that threatened their world.

Their story had only just begun.
