The Shadow Collector
Cassian Moor had always been different. People said he moved like a whisper and that shadows seemed to cling to him longer than they should. He never questioned it until the night he found the first one. A small flicker in the corner of his room that looked almost like a living silhouette, moving independently from any light source. He reached out and it vanished. From that moment he knew his life would never be ordinary again.
Years later he wandered the streets of Eldrith, a city thick with fog and secrets. He had heard rumors of a woman who could command shadows, a mysterious figure who appeared only at midnight along the cliffs by the old lighthouse. Some said she was a spirit others that she was a witch. Cassian felt drawn to her for reasons he could not explain. His own shadows shifted nervously whenever he approached the cliffs as if warning him or guiding him.
It was there, beneath the pale moonlight, that he saw her. A figure dressed in flowing black robes, hair like spun night, eyes glimmering silver as if they contained stars. Shadows twisted and moved around her like living smoke. Cassian stepped closer, heart racing, fear and fascination warring inside him.
You have come he whispered. The woman turned, voice like wind through bare trees. I have been waiting for you. I am Selene, the Shadow Keeper. And you, Cassian Moor, are bound to me by fate and shadow.
Cassian swallowed. Bound? Why
Because your shadows are not mere absence of light he said. They are fragments of your soul fragments that can be taken, stolen, corrupted. You carry a rare essence that can anchor darkness or guide it. You have always known that there was more to your life than the mundane. Now you will learn why.
Before Cassian could respond a gust of wind carried a whisper of danger. Shadows along the cliffs stretched and writhed, forming shapes taller and more terrifying than men. Selene raised her hands and shadows around her leapt like obedient soldiers, forming a protective wall.
They are here she said. The Collectors. Those who would consume souls to feed their own darkness. And you Cassian, are what they seek.
Cassian felt a chill run through him. What do I do
You must trust me. Trust the shadows. He felt a flicker of fear but also an unspoken connection to Selene. He nodded.
Together they moved to the edge of the cliffs. Selene guided his hands, teaching him to feel the shadows as extensions of himself, to bend them with thought and will. For the first time Cassian realized the truth of what he was: a Shadow Collector in training, destined to walk the line between light and darkness.
The Collectors surged forward, figures made of smoke and hunger, claws extended. Cassian felt terror but also power rising within him. Selene whispered, Focus. Protect us. Channel your fear.
Cassian reached inward and touched the shadows at his feet. They obeyed instantly, stretching out like black tendrils, wrapping around the advancing Collectors, holding them at bay. He felt exhilaration. The shadows pulsed with his heartbeat, alive and responsive.
Selene moved beside him, shadows spinning around her in intricate patterns, striking with precision, protecting and attacking. Together they were a force neither human nor entirely ghost. The moonlight reflected off Cassians silver eyes as he raised his hands and unleashed a wave of darkness that surged like a living tide toward the Collectors. They shrieked, vanishing into the night, unable to withstand the bond between him and Selene.
When the air cleared, the cliffs were quiet. Selene turned to him, breathless but smiling. You are stronger than I imagined. Your shadows answer you willingly. Our bond has awakened fully. From now on we walk together.
Cassian stepped closer, feeling her warmth amidst the night and the cold, misty wind. I never thought I would find someone who understands. Who sees me
Selene reached out, fingers brushing his. In this world of shadows and darkness, you are not alone anymore. Our paths are tied, our powers intertwined. You will never walk alone again.
Cassian felt a rush of relief and something deeper, a spark that warmed him despite the cold. Then he smiled. Neither will you.
The moon rose higher in the sky, illuminating the cliffs and the swirling shadows around them, no longer threatening but alive, protective, and beautiful. Cassian and Selene stood hand in hand, ready to face the dark together, bound by shadow and choice, hearts beating as one.
