The Wolf King Who Stole the Storm
Mira Ashwind had never truly belonged to the human world. Storms followed her. Thunder answered her heartbeat. Rain moved when she whispered. She hid this truth all her life because anyone with magic in the kingdom of Dalvar risked exile or execution.
She worked quietly as a mapmaker in the port city of Raylor painting coastlines and storm paths with uncanny accuracy. She told people it was instinct but in truth the sea spoke to her. The clouds whispered warnings. The wind stroked her cheek like an old friend. Her parents always told her that her birth came with a lightning strike so powerful it set the sky on fire. She laughed at the story when she was younger but now she wondered.
One night a violent storm broke across the coast. The sky turned black. The waves rose like mountains. Ships crashed against the docks. People screamed and ran for shelter. Mira felt the storm pulse inside her chest like something alive trying to break free.
She whispered Stop.
The storm obeyed.
The sky froze. The clouds parted. The sea flattened in an instant. Everyone around her stared wide eyed. Mira gasped and dropped to her knees. She had never used her power in front of anyone.
A deep growl rumbled behind her.
She turned and froze.
A man stood only a few steps away tall and broad shouldered with dark hair dripping from the storm. His eyes glowed bright gold like a burning moon. His presence was wild and electric. Something ancient clung to him. Wolves circled him made entirely of smoke and lightning.
He spoke with a low steady voice. You are the Stormbearer.
Mira stumbled back. Who are you
He stepped closer. I am Kael. King of the Stormfang Wolves. Ruler of the Wildsent Woods. And you belong to my world not this one.
Mira swallowed. I do not belong to anyone.
Kaels gold eyes softened but his voice remained firm. I have searched for you for seven years. Since the omens foretold your birth. Storms move at your command. Lightning follows your breath. You are the last of the Skyblood line. The wolves felt your power the moment you stopped the storm. The world is shifting. The old magic is waking. And you are at the center of it.
Mira shook her head. This is insane. I am not some prophecy.
Kael stepped closer. The wolves whined softly behind him. He extended his hand. Come with me. Your power is too great to leave unguarded. The Hunters will come for you. They smell magic. And they kill without mercy.
Before she could answer a loud horn echoed across the city. Black armored riders appeared at the end of the street galloping toward them with silver chains and glowing runes.
Kaels jaw clenched. Hunters.
The wolves leapt forward snarling. The riders raised crossbows aimed at Mira.
Kael grabbed her waist. Hold on.
Lightning exploded around them and the world vanished.
They reappeared deep within a glowing forest lit by floating blue fireflies. Massive trees towered above them their bark carved with old runes. A wide clearing stretched before them where wolves both physical and spectral bowed as Kael arrived.
Mira staggered. What did you do
Kael steadied her with one hand on her arm. I brought you to the Wildsent Woods. My kingdom. You are safe here.
She looked around breathlessly. The forest pulsed with magic like a heartbeat. Wolves moved through shadows silently their eyes glowing like stars. The air itself felt alive.
Kael faced her fully. Mira Ashwind daughter of the storm. The Skyblood line was believed extinct but your birth reignited ancient power. And with that power you can calm or destroy entire realms.
Mira crossed her arms. And what does this have to do with you
Kaels golden gaze locked onto hers. Everything. The Stormfang Wolves are bound to the Skyblood line. For centuries your ancestors guided us protected us and in return we served them. When the Skyblood vanished we lost our purpose. Our control. Our bond to the storm. But now you are here. The next Queen of Storm and Fang.
Mira stepped back quickly. No. No no no. I cannot be your queen. I can barely control a rain shower.
Kael took a slow breath. Then let me teach you. Let me help you master the storm inside you. Because if you do not the Hunters will not be the only ones chasing you. Something far older is stirring.
As if on cue a cold wind swept through the clearing. The fireflies dimmed. The wolves lowered their ears.
Mira shivered. What was that
Kaels expression darkened. The Hollow King. The one who devours magic. He has felt your awakening and he will come for you.
Miras voice trembled. Why me
Kael stepped close enough that she felt the warmth of him the wild power humming beneath his skin. Because you carry the strength of the sky itself. The Hollow King wants to consume it. The Hunters want to cage it. Only the Stormfang can protect it. Protect you.
Mira looked up at him. Why do you care what happens to me
His throat tightened. Because I felt you before you were born. Your storm called to my wolves. Your heartbeat echoed in my dreams. I have waited for you without knowing your face. Without knowing if you would ever survive. The bond between Skyblood and Stormfang is forged before birth. I am tied to you Mira. Not by duty but by destiny.
Her breath caught. Destiny
Kael touched her fingertips gently. His voice softened to a whisper. And desire. I knew the moment I saw you.
Before she could answer the forest shook violently. A massive shadow erupted from the trees. A creature made of darkness and bone lunged at them. The wolves attacked but were thrown aside with a single sweep of its claws.
Kael roared shifting into a massive wolf made of storm clouds and lightning. He collided with the creature tearing through its shadow flesh.
Mira watched in terror as they fought the darkness. The wolves joined Kael but the creature absorbed their strikes like smoke.
Kaels voice echoed in her mind. Mira call the storm
She froze. I cannot
Yes you can. Feel it. It has always been yours.
The creature lunged at Kael pinning him to the ground. His golden eyes flashed in pain.
Mira felt fear explode into anger. Thunder roared above her. The sky split open even though it was night. She raised her hands.
Lightning fell like a waterfall of white fire.
The blast hit the creature shattering it instantly into ash and wind. The forest trembled then quieted.
Mira fell to her knees panting.
Kael shifted back to human form and rushed to her lifting her into his arms. His voice shook with awe. You called lightning without a storm. Only a true Skyblood can do that.
She tried to catch her breath. I almost killed you
Kael cupped her face gently. I am bound to your storm. Your power will never harm me.
Miras eyes softened. Then what happens now
Kael leaned close. His voice was low warm and certain. Now you stay in the Wildsent Woods. Train with me. Learn the truth of your power. And when you are ready you will claim your throne. And I will stand at your side as your protector your partner and whatever else you will allow me to be.
Her heart pounded. And if I say no
Kaels eyes darkened with something both fierce and tender. Then I will still protect you. Even if you never accept the bond. Even if you never take the throne. My loyalty is yours regardless of your choice. But the world is changing Mira. And without you the sky itself will fall.
Mira looked up at the glowing treetops the pack of storm wolves the strange beautiful world that seemed to be waiting for her. Then she looked back at Kael.
I will stay she whispered. Teach me.
Kaels breath trembled as relief washed across his features. Then welcome home Stormbearer.
The wolves howled in unison as lightning spiraled through the sky answering her heartbeat. And for the first time in her life Mira felt something she never thought possible.
Belonging.
